Recently, my friends and I spent three unforgettable days exploring Kaziranga, and the journey was nothing short of magical.
Day 1: Arrival and First Impressions
Our adventure started early as we left Guwahati, the nearest major city, for the 165-km drive to Kaziranga. The road trip itself was a treat, with verdant landscapes and charming villages along the way. By noon, we arrived at our resort near Kaziranga National Park, which combined rustic charm with modern comforts—a perfect base for our stay.
After a delicious lunch, we set out for our first jeep safari in the Central Range of the park. Known for its dense population of rhinos, this area is a favorite among visitors. As our jeep navigated through the tall elephant grass and marshlands, the guide shared fascinating insights into the park’s history and wildlife. The moment we spotted our first one-horned rhino was unforgettable, setting the tone for the rest of the trip. Day 2: Deeper into the Wilderness
The next day began with an early morning elephant safari. Riding atop these gentle giants offered a unique perspective of the park, allowing us to get even closer to the rhinos. The serene jungle ambiance, enhanced by the morning mist and the symphony of waking wildlife, was truly magical.
Later, we visited the Kaziranga National Orchid and Biodiversity Park, a delightful detour showcasing an impressive collection of orchids and native flora. It was a refreshing break, providing insight into the region’s botanical treasures.
In the afternoon, we explored the Western Range of the park, celebrated for its scenic vistas and herds of wild buffalo. The guide’s sharp eyes helped us spot a Great Indian Hornbill and other migratory birds. The highlight of the day was catching a distant glimpse of a tiger, an unforgettable experience that capped off a day of adventure.
Day 3: A Farewell to the Wild
On our final day, we ventured into the Eastern Range, known for its water bodies and dense forests. This range is a paradise for birdwatchers, with sightings of pelicans, storks, and other waterfowl. One of the most memorable moments was watching a herd of wild elephants cross a river—a scene straight out of a nature documentary.
After the morning safari, we returned to our resort to pack up and check out. Before heading back to Guwahati, we made a stop at the scenic Karbi Anglong hills. The rolling tea gardens and serene hills provided a stark but beautiful contrast to Kaziranga’s wetlands. We savored a leisurely lunch at a local eatery, sampling authentic Assamese cuisine, before concluding our journey.
